I just wanted to give you a quick update on the lower X-axis slide. We’ve already fit the turcite, which looked pretty chewed up, and we just finished installing the ball screw. To make sure everything is true to the master way, I used an L-shaped (90-degree) fixture. That lets me indicate both the top and side of the ball screw, so everything lines up perfectly. Doing it this way prevents any unnecessary loads on the machine — it’s just the right way to go. That side is now complete. Behind me, we’ve got the gib being made. It’s up on the fixture, we’ve got all the sizes, and we’re currently picking up the angle using the old gib as a reference. We’re leaving it oversized by about 125 thousandths — more than we need, but I’d rather have extra to work with than come up short. We haven’t figured out the wiper yet, but once we do, I’ll install it with a new design. I had an idea in mind, and I’ll show you that in the next video. Scraping is almost done. After that, I’ll start checking alignment with test bars, then align the sub-spindle and spindle. Once that’s all set, I can really begin checking everything. Hopefully by next Monday or Tuesday, we’ll have it all dialed in, and I’ll be able to say whether things are good or if we need to make a small adjustment, like touching a surface if the X-axis is off by a thou. We’re close. I’ll keep you posted with another video, probably Thursday. Thanks for following along. |
