I just wanted to give you a quick update on the M5 rebuild we’re working on. We’ve disassembled everything, including the headstock and anything attached to the bedways. We supported the electrical cabinet after removing the bracket and plan to add some braces tomorrow to make it sturdier. We lifted the machine to access the bolts under the bed, and next we’ll be taking it downstairs for a thorough pressure wash.

After cleaning, we’ll take off the bed section to inspect both surfaces and check for wear. We’ll use V-blocks and indicators to look for any twist or misalignment. Next, we’ll flip the bed, grind the bottom, then flip it back and grind the top. If we remove any material from the bedways, we’ll add it back to the lower axis slide with Turcite. This will bring the height back to spec and help the slide move more smoothly, which is especially useful for threading.

Right now, the slide runs metal-on-metal, which works, but adding Turcite will make it smoother and bring the centerline back to spec. We haven’t taken apart parts like the turret yet, but from what we can see with the castings, everything looks normal and there’s nothing concerning.

After the bed is done, we’ll mount the X-axis slide on a ground plate to check alignment. The way grinder is right next to us, so everything will be ground in-house. I’ve also shown the headstock, motor, and other parts in the video, and while things are spread out, we’re keeping it organized.

We’ll also check the input shaft, since it often wears out from frequent start and stop cycles. We’ll replace all the bearings and inspect the spline. We’ll also look at the spindle and tailstock, making sure there’s no lift or endplay that could affect machining accuracy.

There’s still a lot to do, but we’re making good progress. I’ll probably post another video update on Friday after we clean more parts and start checking for wear. If not, I’ll do it by Monday at the latest. If you have any questions or want me to check something specific, just give me a call.
