Hey everyone, we’re grinding the X-axis ways to correct some issues. I forgot to record grinding the flats, but we removed about 0.020 inches due to bowing. These ways are critical as they guide the machine, ensuring the X-axis tracks true and remains square to the spindle. When placed on a granite plate, the ways wobble because of the bow. Using an indicator, we see a variation of a few thousandths across the surface, with some areas jumping up to 0.005 inches. After grinding the flats, we removed 0.020 inches, leaving about 0.006–0.007 inches of cleanup needed. Depending on the position, the indicator shows 0.002–0.005 inches of deviation. This misalignment makes gib adjustments tricky and causes the ways to shift during movement. We’re now grinding both the flats and sides to ensure flatness and alignment.Once complete, we’ll mount the ways on the machine and lightly kiss the surfaces to finalize trueness, ensuring the X-axis operates accurately.

Stay tuned for the results!
