Hi everyone, we’ve measured the plates using gauge blocks and the original binders, finding them 0.090 inches oversized, which allows for machining to final dimensions. We already removed 0.020 inches from the flats, leaving 0.070 inches to work with. I’m waiting on the X-axis lead screw to confirm the height and ensure the assembly tracks true, as we’re starting from scratch. We won’t proceed without it to avoid misalignment. We saved the master on one side, but the plates have an issue: the etchings, typically done in metal for precision, were only applied to the glue layer of the flat casting. This needs verification before removing the plates. Next, we’ll check the entire surface for flatness, flip the assembly, and inspect where the X-axis rails bolt up. If they’re not perfectly aligned, we’ll grind them on the way grinder, hopefully starting tomorrow.I also need the apron for the pinion to set the heights accurately. This will determine whether we use thicker or thinner Amco Bronze. Since the plates are oversized, we can machine them down without replacing them. We’ve been working six days a week to keep this moving. I’ll provide another update tomorrow once we establish reference points. Stay tuned! |
