Hi, everyone. I’m updating you on the X-axis slide progress for the machine while we wait for parts. We’ve ground the rails, removed them, and ground the side and bottom surfaces where they bolt up. After bolting everything back together and torquing it down, we put the slide back on the way grinder to touch up the surfaces. Bolting can cause slight misalignment, like railroad tracks, but it was minor—only about four or five tenths off—so we ground it to achieve a perfectly flat surface. We also ground the top surface and the binder reference, flipped the slide, ground the binder, and then re-ground the top to ensure it’s perfectly zero and flat relative to these surfaces. Additionally, we ground the ECMCO bronze filler piece installed previously. However, we hit a snag: the surface where the binder sits is about 60 to 70 thousandths higher than the adjacent surface. We need the screw to decide whether to lower this table or raise the binder without removing too much material. We also found that some bolt holes with babbitting affected the binder clamp placement, so we made minor fixes there. Once we receive the screw, we can confirm measurements, grind and scrape the slide, and square everything up, including the gibs. Regarding the plates I mentioned—parallels—we’re using them to indicate this surface. Since we know it’s flat relative to the bottom, we’ll flip the slide and use these long plates as a master to rub the underside where the slide rides. We’ll grind it first, but grinding isn’t perfectly precise, so we’ll hand-scrape it to true it up. I’ll share another video on that process, but we’re holding off until this step is fully confirmed to avoid any rework. We’re doing minor tasks while waiting for parts, which may delay us by a week or two, depending on when they arrive. If you have questions or concerns, let me know. We’re actively working on it but limited until the parts come in. Thanks for watching! |
